This will be one of the more unconventional reviews here, because I bought the LG 42LH90 for use as a primary computer monitor in a color-calibrated dual-screen setup. It replaces a Sharp LC40E77U HDTV, and sits next to a Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP with its explosively high gamut (read: purity of color) that I use for reference in graphics work.
* Not pixel-perfect, but close
Just like the Sharp Aquos it replaced, it processes color in 4:2:2 (see wikipedia for an explanation). In other words, the color is processed at a slightly lower resolution, resulting in extremely subtle color bleeding around sharp, saturated graphics. This is a non-issue for most people, as video (blu-ray, hdtv, dvd etc.) is already mastered this way naturally, but for “desktop” graphics such as web pages, the effect there. However, it’s not obtrusive like it was on the Sharp, where the 4:2:2 color processing was shimmery and blocky. All you see is a very very subtle bleed.
* Fast response time
The LG’s input lag is negligible. I know what a bad response time feels like thanks to the Dell 2408WFP, but the LG feels just fine. There is very little streaking in dark, moving images… it performs better than the Sharp. Recommended for gaming.
* Great colors
With all of its image processing & other features (like local dimming) disabled, its sharpening set to 50 (neutral/off), its black levels set to “low”, gamma to “medium”, picture mode to “expert” and so on, my Spyder 3 Elite color calibrator had very little to correct. Side by side with the high gamut Dell monitor, the LG comes close to matching its performance. Reds look red, blues look blue, and greens look green. It’s a big step up from the Sharp, where reds looked a little pink, blues a little sky-blue, etc.
* Etc
What else can be commented on? The glassy frame looks nice. The local dimming is interesting for photos & movies, through for desktop graphics it will produce noticeable haloing so I tend to leave it off. The monitor looks plenty fine without it. Its “expert” mode presents a myriad of color correction options, although the LG hardly needs it. It’s a great screen.
Unfortunately I cannot comment on its performance as a TV tuner.

I love this TV. Unpacking it and setting it up was a breeze… just a couple screws to attach the LCD to the base. Brightest picture, deepest blacks, and best colors on any LCD TV I’ve seen. The contrast is simply amazing, which I attribute to the local LED backlighting. The only issue that I found is that when you have a dark area of the screen with a white object, such as text, the screen has a tiny bit of “blooming” around that object, but only visible when viewing the TV at an angle. Trust me, this issue is barely noticeable. Overall the backlighting is more uniform than edge-lit or non-LED backlit displays.

I just recently purchased this set and have been happy with it. Works great right out of the box with all the features you want. No analog audio out so you will need a digital-analog converter for optical sound cable out if you use an old receiver. Great remote, extensive menu and fantastic picture. Of course SD broadcasts look terrible. Bezel is shiny and VERY BIG, which I’m still getting used to but overall quite happy and understand why CNET gave it a 4 out of 5 stars and is just as good as a plasma picture wise. LED-LCD backlit which means TV will last forever and uses less power than most lcd’s. You will be happy with this set.

This TV has an amazingly beautiful picture, with deep darks and bright colors, and good saturation even in soft, light colors that might get washed out on other TVs. Scenic panoramas are so realistic! One reviewer said they thought the picture was too dark overall, but I can’t understand why, unless it’s being watched in a very bright room. My experience is that we had to turn the LED backlight down a lot to make it dim enough and save our retinas. We’re very impressed with the picture quality and the sound is even impressive for a TV, but we still hooked it up to the stereo system, because of course that’s better. But we were impressed with the audio quality as far as TV speakers go.
There was an issue with 1 of the 4 HDMI ports not working, however LG said for any TV over 30″, they will send a technician to your home to repair any issue not caused by customer abuse, and this would be covered, but since we only really need 2 inputs, it’s a tolerable defect. One other small complaint is that the HDMI ports have a loose fit, however, in three weeks, we only had to tighten once and they’re holding steady. The ports are just around behind the screen, easily accessible without going behind the TV, so it’s no problem. These issues are minor, and I would still choose this TV over others for it’s great picture quality! I’m very happy we bought it, and at such a great price. And for LG’s fabulous customer support, 5 stars.
The seller was great (Video & Audio Center) and shipped it same day for free. It arrived in just a couple days.

I researched this TV at CNET and now I see why it was rated so high. Easy to set up right out of the box, Beautiful crisp and bright picture. Great sound and plenty of features.
